At St Patrick’s, we believe that every child is a writer. Our aim is to nurture confident, capable writers by explicitly teaching the skills and knowledge children need to succeed. Writing begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where a strong emphasis is placed on storytelling, talk, and a language-rich environment. Through high-quality phonics teaching, children learn the correct formation of letters and develop the foundations needed to write with confidence, ensuring they leave EYFS ready to continue their writing journey.
As pupils move through the school, they are given a wide range of opportunities to write for different purposes and audiences. Alongside this, children take part in explicit SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) lessons, where they learn key skills and are supported to apply them meaningfully within their writing. This approach ensures that children not only understand how writing works, but can use these skills effectively to communicate their ideas.
